IMPORTANCE OF REPLACING MISSING TOOTH/TEETH

There are multiple reasons as to how you can lose your natural teeth. Some of these include dental cavities, gum issues, trauma. Dentistry has advanced to a level where there are so many evidence based and scientific treatment options available to replace missing teeth.

We at Dental Elements provide all the possible replacement options based on your need, medical condition, economics etc. Some of these include dental implants, dental bridges, conventional full and partial acrylic dentures including cast partial and flexible dentures.

While you might think that what’s wrong if you are missing one or few teeth, it is important to know that this is not the case.

Some of the consequences of missing teeth don’t become apparent until serious damage has already set in. This is why it is vital to have a missing tooth (or teeth) replaced as soon as possible.

What happens if missing teeth are not replaced?

Shifting of adjacent and opposite Teeth
Natural teeth that surround a missing tooth tend to shift their position in order to fill the space. This movement of the existing teeth can result in malalignment, causing food lodgement, cavities on adjacent teeth which compromises on chewing abilities in addition to potential problems on other teeth .

Difficulty in eating food
If there aren’t good, strong and healthy teeth to chew food, dietary intake is affected which in turn effects digestion, metabolism, weight and leads to several systemic conditions such as acidity, bloating, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and can aggravate underlying systemic health issues such as diabetes etc.

Gum Recession
Gums anchor the teeth into jaw bone, if the missing teeth are not replaced, as the adjacent teeth shift and opposing teeth come down, gums around these teeth start to become loose leading to serious gum problems which can lead to eventual loss of other teeth also.

Increased Risks to General Health
If gum issues develop due to missing teeth, it could ultimately raise risks to general health and well-being. Untreated gum issues pose a risk of several health conditions, such as Diabetes, Infective endocarditis, hypertension, heart disease etc.

Changes in Facial Appearance

If missing teeth are not replaced, it could lead to loss of tonicity of facial muscles that drastically alters physical appearance and makes the face appear older than the actual.

All the above mentioned consequences can be prevented and treated if diagnosed at an early stage.
